You're 55? Be the one they call!

Three tips to become more valuable at work.

The New York Times recently posted a guest essay that really hit home.

I Study Successful People. They Have One Habit in Common. By Angela Duckworth.

Bottom line: successful people ask for help.

You know the old adage: be the one who can fix the printer. Well, here’s some real-world advice. If you are over 55 –and have certainly faced ageism in many forms—one way to become indispensable is to be the one everyone calls for help.

More: we have a phrase in Spanish that says “who teaches learns twice” so helping people will help you not only become more valuable but also deepen your own knowledge.

How to start today?

  1. Make yourself available and give help freely, honestly and unselfishly. No one wants to be in debt.
  2. Become a mentor. We wrote a 17-part series on mentorship. Begin here: https://www.your-gray-matters.org/blog/1732096_mentorship-a-key-to-remaining-relevant-after-50-part-1-of-17
  3. Update yourself continuously, so the help you offer is valuable.

One final piece of advice: don’t take it personally if the person doesn’t follow your advice. It’s called “help”, not handcuffs.
